On Friday April 15th, students from over a dozen high schools across the City came to Central Park for NYC SWCD's 19th annual Envirothon. The Envirothon is a national environmental science competition for high school students.  The Winning teams progress from the regional level to the state and then national level. Envirothons are organized by Soil and Water Conservation Districts in partnership with local teachers and high schools.

The Envirothon competition involves five subject categories in which teams are tested: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife and a Current Issue category which are linked to the National Current Issue for the competing year. This year's Current Issue was Invasive Species.

The Envirothon began in Pennsylvania in 1979. New York State held its first Envirothon in 1990 and New York City held its first Envirothon in 1996. The Envirothon is sponsored by the NYS Conservation Districts Employees’ Association. This year's NYC Envirothon was funded by ConEdison.

Next year will be our 20th Envirothon and will be held on Staten Island.
