Centering Soils in NYC's Street Tree Canopy Growth

A vibrant tree stands in a cityscape, surrounded by soil and flowers, evoking a sense of nature amidst urban life.

We were a client to Sam Asher, a graduat student from Pratt Institute for her capstone project titled From the Ground Up: Centering Soils in NYC's Street Tree Canopy Growth.  You can watch her presentation on our YouTube channle here.

As part of the project, Sam produced a zine for anyone who cares about street tree health.

"Stewarding Soils in Street Tree Beds: Where to Start" is an educational resource on the importance of cultivating microecosystems in street tree beds and a guide on how to care for them. Serving both as a celebration of this ongoing work and as a call to action for collaborators of the urban forest, this zine has a grounding message: to equitably expand street tree canopy coverage, one must look down towards the soils. Written and illustrated by Sam Asher as part of their Graduate Capstone in partnership with NYCSWCD, this resource is meant to be a living document supporting NYC's urban canopy growth from the ground up.
